The Hawaii Natural Energy Institute, located on the campus of the University of Hawaii at Manoa, was established by the State Legislature in 1974, in the aftermath of the world’s first oil crisis.  Its mission is to seek new forms of energy to supplant the state’s dependence on fossil fuels

Maui Electric Company (MECO)

Co-Project Lead

Hawaiian Electric Company, Inc. (HECO), and its subsidiaries, Maui Electric Company, Ltd. (MECO), and Hawaii Electric Light Company, Inc. (HELCO), provide electricity to 95% of the state’s 1.2 million residents on the islands of Oahu, Maui, Hawaii, Lanai and Molokai.
