Maui Smart Grid

The Maui Smart Grid Project will demonstrate and evaluate new technologies that will help residents better manage and reduce energy consumption during periods of high demand. It will also assist Maui Electric Company (MECO) operate the electricity grid more efficiently.

The U.S. Department of Energy is funding this project as part of a nationwide set of demonstration projects. MECO and the Hawaii Natural Energy Institute (HNEI) at the University of Hawaii are leading the effort. The project team has selected Maui Meadows in south Kihei as the site for evaluating home-based smart grid technologies with volunteer participants.

The results from the project will be compared with other demonstration projects throughout the U.S. and also used for decision making on future smart grid initiatives in the state of Hawaii.

What is a Smart Grid?

The smart grid, often called the energy internet, is a system of interconnected technologies that enable two-way communications between different parts of the electric power system, from generation through to the meter and appliances that consume electricity.  Read more >>

What to Expect as a Participant?
